Chapter 7: Jasper

“Cara said she’s done with her exam. I told her to meet us out front in ten.” Pierce says

“One of us should have stayed with her,” I say.

“I think you’re being a little bit paranoid. Nothing is going to happen to her in broad daylight on campus.”

“We’ll see,” I mutter under my breath.

Two blocks away from campus there’s a POP! Followed by hissing and the car starts shaking.

“Great. A fucking flat,” Pierce says. “I just had this thing serviced. They must have overfilled my tires. I have a spare. Call Cara and tell her to find a friend and wait with them.” He tosses me his phone and pulls into a parking lot so he’s off the main thoroughfare. He gets out, removes his jacket, and retrieves the spare from the trunk.

I pull up Cara’s name and hit send. It rings…once…twice…three times then goes to voicemail. I dial again; the same thing. I text her:

Hey beautiful, pick up the phone. We ran into

car trouble and we’re running late. Text me

back when you get this. Or call me.

I hit send. “She’s not answering,” I yell over the car to Pierce.

He stops what he’s doing. “A text or a call?”

“Either. She probably still has it on silent after her exam.”

“Fuck! There was a nail in the tire. I don’t think this was all by chance. We need to get to campus now!” He picks up his pace. He has the tire changed in under ten minutes, and we’re speeding off toward campus. He pulls up to the front where Cara is supposed to meet us, but she’s nowhere to be seen, so he whips into a faculty parking spot, throws the car into park, and gets out.

“Let’s split up. I’ll take the floor that her test was on, you take the ground floor. Check the bathrooms, glance in the classrooms. Look anywhere and everywhere that she could be.” Pierce orders.

“Got it.” We take off into the building and begin searching high and low for our girl. I check both of the women’s restrooms on the first floor. A couple of co-eds are pissed about me entering their space, but I don’t have time to spare feelings right now. I check in every classroom and seek out Professor Andrews–the professor of Cara’s Chemistry class.

I knock on the door to his office.

“Come in!” he calls out.

I open the door and step inside. “Professor!”

“Jasper! What a pleasant surprise. How are you, boy?” he asks with a warm, genuine smile.

“I’m okay. I am just looking for my girlfriend, Cara Iverson. She had an exam in your class that just ended?”

“Yes! Bright girl. She left right after. I didn’t see where she went because there were still students finishing up their exams. I’m sure she’s around here somewhere. Did you check the women’s rooms?”

“Yes. I’ll check the other floors too. Thanks for your help,” I say and leave without saying goodbye.

I search the second floor, and when I don’t find her there, I meet Pierce on the third floor.
